How to pay and track a street team
Street teams are usually paid per shift, per location or per piece, and every one of those needs a reliable record of what was actually done. Here’s how the common pay structures compare, and how to track work so pay and client proof match.

The common ways to pay
Per shift or per hour
Best for: flyering, hand-to-hand sampling, brand ambassadors, event promotion. Output is hard to count, so you pay for time. Watch for: you’ll want proof of where people actually were during the shift, not just a start and end time.
Per location
Best for: Wild Posting®, wheat pasting, window clings, sign installs, where every stop is a countable job. Watch for: define what “done” means for a location (how many posters, what size) and pay only on photographed, located proof, so two people don’t get paid for the same wall.
Per piece
Best for: high-volume work like sniping or door hangers. Watch for: quality. Paying per piece rewards speed, so spot-check photos for readable, properly placed creative.
Base plus bonus
A shift or day rate plus a bonus per completed location, or for finishing a market on time. It keeps people motivated without rewarding sloppy work, and it’s easy to explain.
Whatever rates you set, write them down per campaign before the work starts: the rate, what counts as a completed unit, how proof must be submitted, and when people get paid.
Track the work once, use it three times
The biggest time sink isn’t paying people. It’s reconciling three different records: what the team says they did, what the client was promised, and what you can prove. Keep one record and everything comes from it:
- Pay: count each person’s completed locations or shifts from their proof photos.
- Client proof: the same photos, with location and time, become the proof of performance report.
- Planning: photos by person and market show who’s reliable where, for staffing the next campaign.
What to track for every job
- Who did it, and on which campaign and market
- A photo of the finished work, with GPS location and the time it was taken
- Anything unusual: a covered wall, a moved location, a refresh
Records typed in after the fact are where disputes start. Records captured at the moment of the photo are hard to argue with, for your team and your client.
How StreetPOP helps
StreetPOP gives every person on your team a sign-in by email link (no passwords), records GPS and time with every photo, and shows the work on a live map. Reports by team member, campaign and market show exactly who did what, ready for payroll, and the same photos become your client’s proof page.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the most common way to pay a street team?
It depends on the work. Per shift or per hour is common for flyering, sampling and promotions; per location or per piece is common for postering and sign installs, where output is easy to count. Many teams combine a base with a per-location bonus.
How do I make sure street team work was actually done?
Have each person shoot proof photos that record GPS location and time automatically, and pay from those records. The same photos then go to the client as proof of performance.
Should street team members be employees or contractors?
That’s a legal and tax question that depends on your location and how the work is directed. Check with an accountant or employment lawyer; the rules for classifying workers are strict in many places.
How do I track a street team across several cities?
Use one app for every market so all photos land in one place by campaign and market, with the same fields everywhere. A live map shows coverage as teams work, so gaps are spotted before the shift ends.
